Mersen to relocate, expand in Bay County

Graphite and materials manufacturer Mersen USA, based in Midland, announced it will locate an additional facility for manufacturing in Williams Township, in Bay County.

The announcement--and arrangements for the expansion--were made with the help of Bay Future.

"This project is a big win for Williams Township, Bay County, the Great Lakes Bay region, and the state of Michigan. We couldn't be more excited or happier that a world class company like Mersen has decided to invest in our community and also create quality jobs for our residents," says Bay Future President and CEO Magen Samyn.

Mersen will spend about $21.3 million building a new 80,000-square-foot facility in the township, creating an estimated 32 new jobs in the process. It broke ground on the new building in October, and the facility is planned to be up and running by the end of 2013.

The company was approved for business development tax incentives of about $320,000 through the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, and the township also will consider a 12-year tax abatement for the new facility.

Mersen currently employs 39 people at its Midland location.
