Chronic wounds are a health condition affecting an increasing number of people, so the opening of a new specialized center in Midland to treat them is welcome.
The Wound Treatment Center will open its doors October 21 at the
MidMichigan Medical Center in Midland. It offers advanced therapies, treatments and comprehensive care for both chronic wounds and the conditions that cause them, such as diabetic or pressure ulcers, infections, surgical wounds and other injuries.
It's the second such treatment center in the region--the first is in Alma--and is opening in response to increased demand, according to MidMichigan Medical Center. Some of the advanced treatments offered include hyperbaric chamber therapy, high-tech dressings and the latest in medications to speed healing.
Chronic wounds are defined as any wound that has not healed after 30 days of conventional treatment. It's a condition that affects more than 8 million people in the U.S., according to the center, and the number is increasing due to an aging population and higher rates of diabetes and obesity.
The center brings together physicians and care protocols from several disciplines, such as infectious disease, physical therapy, nutrition, pain management, and patient education.
