What if you didn't have a permanent home, but instead lived in a tent? Most anyone would find it unpleasant, unsanitary and unsatisfactory. That's why one Bay City company is doing their best to make sure people in Haiti, where shelter is difficult to come by at times, are getting a chance to move out of their tents and into a permanent structure.

That's the situation in many parts of the world, which is something the Central Michigan University Clean Water Initiative wants to see come to an end. While Cason Thorsby was earning his bachelor's and master's degrees from Central Michigan University, he had a project simmering on the side -- Dixie Dave's Wild Game Soup. This fall, the 24-year-old Thorsby is looking forward to seeing his product on the shelves at Cabela's, Gander Mountain, and other big-time retailers.

Like most college kids, John Burgess and Brett Bollenbacher spent their college years at Northwood University cramming for exams, eating too much pizza, and hanging out with friends. But that's where the similarities end. By the time they graduated, the two Midland natives had already started up and sold a successful company for a profit.

A new internship program is jumpstarting the entrepreneurial spirit in area college students by pairing them with start-up companies in Mid Michigan. The program provides students with real-life experience that traditional classrooms can't provide. The program is a way to infuse companies with talent, energy and assistance at a lower-than-normal cost -- and convince graduates to stay in Michigan.
