Saginaw county gets grant to use scrap tires as road matieral

Road costs are way up and that's no secret, so knowing that there are road commissions out there attempting to find ways to bring those costs down is rather refreshing.

The road commission in Saginaw County is receiving nearly $800,000 in grants from the Michigan Department of Transportation for increased use of scrap tires in road projects.

The grants, five in total, will pay for about half of the cost to reconstruct about eight miles of road using rubberized asphalt.

The number of scrap tires being used? Approximately 12,000.

Some of the roads being repaved are in Buena Vista Township and are residential roads.

"This significant state grant makes it possible to repave deteriorated roads while recycling thousands of scrap tires, which are both an eyesore and a health hazard for our families," says State Representative Stacy Erwin Oakes (D-Saginaw). "I'm glad that we can now proceed with this important project in Buena Vista Township."

The Saginaw County Road Commission had originally wanted to repave the roads last year, but did not have the funding for the project. They applied for the Scrap Tire Cleanup Grant to apply toward the project last year.
